About Bridges Outreach

In 1988, Bridges launched its first mobile outreach, and began bringing food, clothing and necessities to the homeless living on the streets of New York City. Through uninterrupted, weekly street outreach (which we call a “Run”), Bridges has sustained its mission to bring the housed and homeless together in community for more than 25 years. In 1992, to address the need closer to home, Bridges began regular outreach in Newark and then, in 1994, began outreach in Irvington, New Jersey. Each year, Bridges makes more than 225 “Runs,” or outreach visits to the street, providing food, clothing and necessities to 500 people in need each week. Bridges engages more than 2,600 volunteers each year in its outreach from over 90 volunteer groups from throughout northern New Jersey.  Our volunteer opportunities are unique in that they offer direct contact with the homeless population and allow volunteers and people who are experiencing homelessness to connect on a personal level.  The impact to both the person who is homeless and the volunteer is a reciprocal experience of changing attitudes while breaking down stereotypes.

In 2011, Bridges expanded its objective by launching the Coalition of Services in Newark, which has the highest concentration of homeless in New Jersey, by creating the first multi-agency effort to bring a broad array of services directly to the homeless in the neighborhoods where they live. In 2014 Bridges opened “Project Connect” at St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark to provide a permanent home and to continue the collaborative success of the Coalition of Services. Project Connect is a virtual one stop resource center for all homeless needs, offering  medical and social service agencies a unique opportunity for on-site office hours. Clients work directly with Bridges’ case managers to create a multistep plan to achieve individual goals. Our permanent home at St. John’s allows Bridges’ case managers to assess the complete needs of the client, link clients to services and follow-up with those clients and service agencies. This continuum of care results in a healthier life, with the ultimate goal of housing.
